Printmaking is a broad field that includes etching, lithography, screen and relief printing.   Lino and woodcuts are called relief prints.  Most of my prints are done in the reduction method. This method requires only one plate/block to create a multicolored image. The block is destroyed as the process proceeds.
  1. The design is drawn on to the lino.
  2. Areas to remain white (or the color of the paper) are carved from the block first.
  3. Ink is rolled onto the raised areas, starting with the lightest color (usually).
  4. Utilizing a registration method the first color is printed – either by hand burnishing the print or running it through some kind of press.
  5. The areas of the design to stay in that first color printed are then carved from the lino. A second color is rolled on and printed and that continues until all the layers are printed.
  6. I’ve done up to 10 layers on a print.
  7. Sometimes I used different methods for the backgrounds of the print, either watercolor or acrylic designs or newspaper/magazine pages, or art techniques like chine colle or collage.
  8. Sometime I use multiply blocks for my prints. This method does not destroy the plates and the prints can be used in an open edition.
  9. Once the printing of the reduction method edition is complete, further prints cannot be made as the lino is destroyed in the process.
  10. Every print in an edition has been individually made by hand, thus giving it a unique quality. My prints are printed on quality printmaking paper, usually utilizing eco-friendly oil based inks. The majority of my prints are hand-printed, I don't use a press.
  11. When the edition is complete, I sign, title and number each print.
My prints are original and limited (unless labeled as an open edition). Fine art original prints are often confused with reproductions. Reproductions are not original artwork, they are photographic copies of an existing artwork. Please be well-informed when purchasing fine art.
